Advanced (non-LWR) Fission Reactors

LEADIR-PS100 is a 100 MWt/36MWe lead-cooled, TRISO-fueled, graphite-moderated pebble bed reactor.

The 50 MWt/15 MWe Thorenco reactor operates in the thermal/epithermal spectrum and is cooled by natural circulation at full power, with eutectic sodium and beryllium fluoride coolant. The thorium-uranium-sodium-beryllium-fluoride fuel salt is contained within Hastelloy-nickel cladding in a honeycomb geometry, and the reactor is designed to operate for 10 years without refueling.

The LFTR is a fluoride salt-fueled, graphite-moderated, thorium-fueled thermal spectrum molten salt reactor. Thorium-232 is converted into uranium-233 in a breeding blanket to fuel this 600 MWt/250MWe reactor.

The TAP Reactor is a liquid-fueled, fluoride salt-cooled, zirconium hydride-moderated thermal spectrum reactor. The 1250 MWt/550 MWe first-of-a-kind design will use 5% enriched uranium as both startup and makeup fuel.

The StarCore SPB is a 36 MWt/20 MWe helium-cooled, graphite moderated high temperature gas reactor. The standard TRISO fuel pebbles are static in the core, and the reactor operates for 5 years without refueling. A service agreement is currently under development through the Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission's Pre-Licensing Vendor Design Review process.

This hybrid system produces a peaking power of 850 MWe via a prismatic high-temperature gas reactor coupled to a natural gas-fired facility, enabling rapid load-following. The nuclear system is moderated by graphite and utilizes low-enriched TRISO fuel with a 2-year refueling cycle. An open-system Brayton cycle combustion turbine with a bottoming Rankine steam cycle enables very high thermal efficiencies.

The SC-HTGR is a modular graphite-moderated, helium-cooled high temperature gas-cooled reactor with a prismatic block-type core configuration. This 625 MWt TRISO-fueled reactor is most suitable for industrial applications and may also be used for electricity generation.

EM2 is a modular helium-cooled fast spectrum reactor design with a net output of 500 MWt/265 MWe utilizing 14.5% enriched uranium carbide as startup fuel.

The Xe-100 is a helium-cooled, graphite-moderated high temperature gas reactor operating in an epithermal neutron spectrum with a pebble bed fuel configuration. It utilizes TRISO fuel pebbles, based on 15.5% enriched uranium and produces 200 MWt/76 MWe.

The ARC-100 is a 260 MWt/100 MWe sodium-cooled, fast spectrum reactor with a 20-year fuel cycle based on EBR-II, a US National Lab reactor that operated for 30 years.
